Ways to treat depression without medication
Do you really believe that medication can solve your mental and emotional difficulties? You may have been told your depression is due to a ‘chemical imbalance in your brain’ which needs to be treated with prescription medication.
As the saying goes: “healthy body, healthy mind”. Dealing with physical health issues really can affect mood changes, negative thoughts, being irritable, poor sleep, brain fog, and that ongoing fatigue.
There are no tests to diagnose mental health problems – just your symptoms, which are interpreted differently, depending on your practitioner.
Depression has many different causes. When the reason for depression is unclear, and nothing can reasonably explain it, it may not be ‘you’ – it may be your health that is the reason for the way you feel, so treating your health may lead to your full recovery.
If you feel irritable and anxious (or just plain anxious) when you can’t eat right away – ditch the sugar! Avoiding sugar means your moods can be more balanced and fluctuate less. This means, for the most part, preparing your own food – which is well worth the effort, because you can notice improvements very quickly. Stick to fish, meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit, along with whole grains, if you are able to tolerate them.
Foods to avoid to begin with, are wheat and dairy. Gluten, soy, and corn may also be allergenic foods, not least because of the way they are grown and processed. If any of these foods are foods that you ‘just have to have’, it can indicate that you may be addicted to them and they are wreaking havoc with your body chemistry.
Have your nutrition checked out by getting your levels tested for iron, vitamin B12, iodine, and chromium. If found deficient, remarkable improvements can occur once depleted nutrients are replaced – all for the body’s need of a vitamin or mineral!
Low thyroid function or imbalance can cause anxiety, depression, brain fog, weight gain, poor concentration, cold sensitivity, dry skin, constipation and hair loss. With appropriate treatment, thyroid function can be normalised – and so will you be!
The three tests you can have done to check your thyroid function are:
1. A full thyroid profile test – not just your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which often shows up as ‘normal’ when your thyroid is not functioning normally at all.
2. Have iodine levels checked. Iodine is essential for normal thyroid function.
3. Have your tendon reflexes checked with a practitioner who uses the Thyroflex machine. Before blood tests were commonly used for diagnosis, doctors used a symptom picture and reflex tests to diagnose thyroid problems. The good ones still do!
